Insights from our Pioneers - Sarah Hanna | Associate Consultant - Data & Analytics
Algorithms are becoming increasingly important in our daily lives. They are used to make decisions about everything from credit scores to job applications. However, algorithms can also perpetuate biases that exist in society. For example, if a data set used to train an algorithm only includes data from one particular group, the resulting algorithm may only be able to make decisions that benefit that group.
That is why it is essential to have a diverse team working on these algorithms. By including individuals from different backgrounds, we can create algorithms that take into account the needs and experiences of a broader range of people. This can lead to more equitable outcomes and reduce the risk of perpetuating harmful biases.
When it comes to gender bias, women are massively misrepresented in data and in the IT industry as a whole, particularly in AI. As a result, their point of view is not being taken into account when developing algorithms. Only 22% of AI professionals worldwide are female. This is simply not enough.
Avoiding bias, is not an easy problem to solve. However, we can take necessary actions to reduce it. Check out the article by Rootstrap to see 9 ways we can reduce bias in our algorithms
