Security-Cleared Recruitment in 2025: Guidance for Clients and Candidates
By Pratap Vara, Director of Contract Recruitment at Pioneer Search
At Pioneer Search, I’ve supported a number of clients with hiring for security-cleared roles. It’s a specialised area of recruitment that can be complex at times, but it also creates valuable opportunities for candidates and helps clients deliver important projects.
Because clearance is something that can feel confusing if you haven’t been through the process before, I wanted to share a few insights that may be useful for both clients and candidates.
For Clients
When hiring security-cleared professionals, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Defining clearance levels early – whether BPSS, SC or DV, being clear at the outset prevents delays.
- Building in realistic timelines – the process for gaining clearance takes time, and even when a candidate already holds it, transferring from one company to another is not always instant. Factoring this into hiring plans is key.
- Balancing compliance with speed – it’s important to keep checks thorough while moving things forward in a timely way.
- Protecting candidate data – handling sensitive information with care throughout the process.
To show how this plays out in practice, here are a few examples from cleared roles we’ve worked on at Pioneer Search:
- Interaction Designer – 5 days from job opening to offer
- Application Architect – 10 days from opening to offer
- Front-End Developer – 5 days from opening to offer
- Two further Front-End Developer roles – 3 days from opening to offer
*On average, SC clearance transfer and vetting take around 4 weeks before contractors can start onsite.
The duration for SC Clearance and security vetting can vary widely due to the complexities of government processes. These delays can pose a risk to candidate engagement and commitment.
That’s why our experienced team play a critical role - not just in sourcing talent, but in guiding contractors through the clearance journey, maintaining strong relationships, and ensuring they remain focused and committed throughout. Skilled recruiters are essential to keeping candidates engaged, aligned with expectations, and ultimately ensuring they start successfully with the client.
For Candidates
If you’re considering a role that requires clearance, here’s a simple overview of the most common levels:
- BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) – entry-level checks covering identity, employment history, immigration status and criminal records.
- SC (Security Check) – more detailed checks, including financial history and references, often needed for access to sensitive information. The process can take several weeks, and transferring existing clearance from one employer to another may also take time.
- DV (Developed Vetting) – the highest level, involving in-depth interviews and assessments of personal and family history. Like SC, transfers between companies can take longer than expected.
Each level comes with different requirements and timelines. From my experience, being prepared for the process and knowing what to expect helps things run more smoothly.
Final Thoughts
At Pioneer Search, we’ve worked on a range of cleared roles, from Interaction Designers and Application Architects to Front-End Developers, and have seen how timelines can differ widely depending on the clearance stage. Preparation, communication and support make all the difference.
If you’d like to know more, whether you’re hiring or considering a cleared opportunity yourself, I’d be glad to have a conversation.
