How Long Does It Take to Hire a Contractor?
How long does it really take to hire and onboard a contractor in London's Specialty Insurance market? From rapid 2-day turnarounds to more complex 60-day searches, we analysed 50 recent contractor placements to better understand real hiring and onboarding timelines across the market.
As a specialist recruitment partner to London Market and Specialty insurers, we track two key stages of the contractor hiring journey. The first is the time from role registration to contractor start date, and the second is the time from offer acceptance to contractor start date. Together, these provide a practical benchmark for organisations planning contractor engagements, particularly in a market where speed, compliance and specialist skill availability all play a role in mobilisation timelines.
Time from Role Registration to Contractor Start
Across the 50 placements reviewed, the average time from role registration to contractor starting on site was 20 working days. This reflects a market where demand for specialist contractor talent remains strong, but where established recruitment partnerships and access to active contractor networks help organisations maintain speed without compromising quality.
In most cases, where role requirements were clearly defined and stakeholders were aligned early in the process, three to four weeks remained a realistic expectation for contract hiring within the London Specialty Insurance market. Clarity of brief and early decision-making continue to be two of the biggest drivers of hiring speed.
The fastest contractor placements were completed in just 2 working days. These accelerated timelines were typically achieved where the required skillset matched contractors already active within our network, and where hiring teams were able to move quickly through shortlisting, interview and offer stages. Early engagement with compliance and onboarding requirements also helped reduce delays, reinforcing the value of maintaining access to a live, pre-qualified contractor community.
At the other end of the spectrum, the longest contractor search took 60 working days. These more extended timelines were typically driven by highly niche technical requirements, multiple stakeholder interview stages, or contractors working notice periods while completing existing project commitments. Complexity rather than talent availability alone was often the main factor extending hiring timelines.
Onboarding and Time from Offer Accepted to On Site
Onboarding is often where delays occur. From offer acceptance to contractor start date, the average onboarding time across our sample was 21 working days.
The fastest onboarding process was completed in just 2 working days, while the longest took 33 working days. The average onboarding timeline typically includes compliance checks, referencing, right to work verification, background screening and internal approval processes. While contractor hiring is often perceived as fast-moving, onboarding alone can take around three weeks where processes are not aligned early.
The fastest onboarding timelines were achieved where compliance documentation was prepared in advance, internal approvals were streamlined, and contractors were immediately available to start. Preparation and proactive compliance management play a significant role in improving mobilisation speed, particularly within regulated industries such as insurance.
The longest onboarding timelines were generally caused by extended background screening requirements, additional regulatory checks, internal governance signoffs, and contractor availability constraints. This demonstrates that onboarding efficiency can be just as important as sourcing capability when planning project delivery timelines.
